These tests and in-person interviews are designed to identify if this candidate will be able to contribute to an already established infrastructure, both technically and procedurally.
We are trying to determine if the candidate can take instructions or go through the SOPs and perform a task, resolve a ticket or give a warm handover further. Does a candidate understand SLAs, document his findings, and follow an established escalation process?
Then for more complex issues, can this person use his skills and experience to identify a solution and successfully run with it. This may involve various steps like researching the issue, building a scenario, and implementing a fix or at least a workaround to ensure that the system is up and running. Does this person have the sophistication to read between the lines and identify functional requirements implicit in a higher level and more coarse-grained specification?
The automated tests can only do as much and an in-person interview helps us identify the subtler aspects of the person’s skills.
